Infantino insists on a World Championship with 48 teams

The extravagant proposal of the President of the World Football Federation (FIFA) Gianni Infantino for World Championship featuring 48 teams will be examined 'under a microscope' when the people from the Board meet to discuss the process of application for a host of the 2026 World Cup.
The Executive Committee shall meet on Thursday and Friday in Zurich, as the main theme is to choose what continent the tournament will take place at, and what the formula will be. But Infantino added that he hoped to continue discussions on the subject in January 2017. But the question with participating teams is one of the most important ones.
Infantino, who was elected in February in place of the removed Sepp Blatter, announced for World Championships with 40 teams in the very beginning, but he met with fierce opposition from big clubs. But Infantino does not stop here and last week decided to continue the battle with the upper East teams, adding that there is already a new idea - World Championship with 48 countries.
The formula that the FIFA President offers is 32 teams to play knock-out matches in the host country. Hence the 16 winners will join the 16 highest ranked teams listed and the total of 32 teams will continue in accordance with the old formula with 8 groups of 4 teams.
The French press called the idea 'terrible' and the German coach Joachim Loew warned that these changes will have a detrimental effect. Loew believes that the increase of teams will take the quality of the tournament and will reflect badly on the physics and the psyche of the players.
Critics believe that the way Infantino wants to appeal to small countries of all 211 members of FIFA. But some people warn that he is going on the way of Sepp Blatter, who has used the same methods.
