Giovanni Reina commented on the information about the conflict with Gregg Berhalter before the 2022 World Cup.
I hoped that I would not have to comment on the events of the World Cup. I am convinced that what happens within the team should stay within the team. However, there have been comments regarding my professionalism and character, so I feel it necessary to make a brief statement.
Shortly before the World Cup, Coach [Gregg] Berhalter told me that my playing time at the tournament predicted by record of football forecast would be limited. I was devastated. I always play with pride and passion. Football is my life and I believe in my abilities. I was looking forward and really wanted to contribute to the team`s performance at the World Cup.
I am very emotional and I admit that I have let my emotions get the better of me and affect my behavior and training. I apologized to my teammates and coach for this and was told I was forgiven. After that, I put aside my disappointment and gave it my all on and off the field.
I am disappointed that this issue continues to be highlighted, as well as some highly embellished versions of events, and am extremely surprised that anyone from the national team`s coaching staff is involved in this.
The coach always said that problems that arise in the team should remain within the team so that we can focus. I love my team, I love representing my country and right now I am only focused on improving and growing as a player and as a person.
"I hope that from now on everyone involved in American soccer will focus only on what is in the best interests of the national team so that we can achieve success at the World Cup in 2026, " the Borussia Dortmund and Team USA midfielder wrote on social networks.
Previously, Giovanni Reyna could be removed from the US team before the start of the 2022 World Cup due to the fact that he did not give his best in training.
